A great afternoon for some competitive softball at Boyd Street! Middle welcomed the Mainland Mustangs after seeing them in April and losing the game 17-7.
Mainland took the lead on a single in the first inning and Middles bats just couldn’t string together the hits. The pitching was strong on both sides. Mainland Regional pitchers struck out nine, while Charlotte Selover sat down five. Bright spots for Middle Township included a single by Sayde Nicols in the first and third inning, a hard ground ball to shortstop by Maverick Adams, and Olivia Clarke ‘s double shot to center field in the bottom of the fourth. D’Agostino was credited with the victory for Mainland Regional. The fireballer surrendered zero runs on four hits over seven innings, striking out nine and walking one. Charlotte Selover took the loss for the home team. The pitcher surrendered two runs on eight hits over seven innings, striking out five and walking one. Nichols led Middle with two hits in three at bats. The team didn't commit a single error in the field. Morgan Kern had the most chances in the field with six. Coaches were super proud of the team effort and energy in today’s game. The team is only getting better every time they hit the diamond! Lots of softball left to play this season with 7 games over the next 2 weeks! The Panthers will travel to Pleasantville tomorrow afternoon to meet the Greyhounds for the second time this season. First pitch is at 4pm! Go Middle! 🐾🧡 This weeks ATHLETE OF THE WEEK goes to Junior Center Fielder Sarah Hughes. A varsity player since her freshmen year, Sarah is a huge asset to the teams outfield defense. Missing almost half of the season due to the moved Volleyball season this year, Sarah has dominated her position since returning.
In the last 3 games- Sarah has had 6 crucial outs in center field, including 5 against a hard hitting Millville team. Sarah has also gotten on base 6-9 times in the lead off position in the last 3 games and had 3 runs against Cape May Tech on Wednesday. Sarah’s bunt game is unstoppable because she is so fast running the bases, she has had 2 solid bunts in the past week that opponents struggled to field and get her out at first. Awesome job SARAH! Keep it up! 🎉 Charlotte Selover was brilliant in the pitcher's circle on Wednesday, as @char.s.41 threw a no-hitter to lead The Panthers past Cape May County Tech 11-0.
Isabella D’Alonzo led Middle to victory by driving in five runs. Bella went 2-for-3 at the plate. D’Alonzo drove in runs on a groundout in the first, a double in the third, and a double in the fourth. The home team notched six runs in the fourth inning. She played well behind the plate, had 5 RBIs and 2 runs in the game! Go Bella! Congratulations seniors! 🐾🧡🎉 The Panthers are back in action on Monday for a varsity only game vs Mainland at Boyd Street! First pitch at 4pm. Only 2 more home games!! Go Middle!! ARTICLE LINK
By BRIAN CUNNIFF Ask a senior currently participating in spring high school sports and every one of them will tell you how appreciative they are of the opportunity after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic canceled last season. Then there’s Sayde Nichols. A senior on the Middle Township High School softball team, Nichols would not have played in 2020 had there been a season anyway. Not after major knee surgery. Finally healthy — well as healthy as she can be, anyway — Nichols has been one of the top players for the Lady Panthers this spring. “I am beyond happy to be back on this field,” Nichols said recently. “It’s my biggest dream.” Nichols suffered a freak injury during the summer ahead of her junior year at Middle when her dog came out from around a corner and banged into her left knee. She ended up needing a complete knee reconstruction. Nichols said doctors cut her hamstring in half and used the muscle to build new ligaments around the knee. Nichols had the surgery in August 2019. She only began playing softball again when preseason practice began in April. Although she no longer has full flexibility in her left leg due to part of her hamstring being gone, Nichols has produced for Middle. She went into this week with 11 hits in 28 at bats (.393 batting average) and was second on the team in runs scored with 12 and RBI with 10. She’s also walked a team-high nine times. Nichols also shines defensively at shortstop and occasionally pitches as well. This despite a series of injuries to both knees. As a freshman, Nichols dislocated her right kneecap while on Middle’s Florida trip over spring break. But she only missed a week due to that injury. “It seemed like I was always hurt on and off,” Nichols said, almost while laughing at her own bad luck. “I just try to be the type of player to just keep going.” A starter for Middle since her freshman season, Nichols has emerged as a leader on the team. “She goes hard every single day practice and in every game,” Middle coach Megan Russ said. “She usually plays short but we can also put her on the mound, too. No matter where she is, she crushes it.” Nichols, who has also played travel softball for the New Jersey Gators, appears to play the game with a reckless abandon. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t worried about suffering another injury. “Always, always always,” Nichols said. “Sometimes I have bruises all up my left side because my body’s moving differently than it used to. Sometimes I worry if I slide into home that I’ll jam my knee. I don’t have full mobility, so I’m always worried.” The injury concerns are not stopping Nichols from enjoying her final high school season. “I just usually went to every Middle game and every travel game and was like, ‘Let’s play,’ and I didn’t really think about too much beyond that,” Nichols said. “Now I’m playing every game like I’m not sure if it’s my last.” The Panthers Varsity struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Our Lady of Mercy Academy, giving up seven runs.
OLMA fired up the offense in the first inning, scoring 3 runs. The home team scored four runs in the fifth inning to finish off their scoring. Charlotte Selover took the loss for Middle. The righthander lasted six innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs while striking out five and walking zero. Alexis Yaeckel and Grace Thompson each collected one hit to lead Middle. Grace also was outstanding on the bases in the 5th inning, finding her way across home plate on passed balls and an error. It was OLMA’s Senior game & they also recognized our four seniors during their ceremony. Thank you Olma Softball 💚💛. The Panthers are back in action tomorrow home against Cape May Tech for their senior night. Senior ceremony is at 5:30. First pitch is at 6pm. Go Middle!! 🐾🧡 The #MTHSsoftball Varsity team watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in an 11-0 loss to Millville. Charlotte Selover took the loss for the home team. The righty lasted five innings, allowing 12 hits and 11 runs while striking out four and walking one. Sarah Hughes , Grace Thompson, Alexis Yaeckel, and Selover all had one hit to lead the team. Over all the Panthers played a great game. Millville hit the ball hard and often! Middle never gave up, made awesome plays and supported each-other through the entire game! The Panthers just could not get their bats around today. Defensive player of the game goes to Sarah Hughes who had 5 monster outs in center field! She also turned one of those outs into a double play with shortstop Sayde Nichols. The game was also part of “Military Appreciation Week”. Umpires wore olive green shirts and accompanying caps to salute the US Armed Forces. 🇺🇸 Middle will take the weekend off and travel to Our Lady of Mercy Academy on Tuesday May 11th for their second meeting of the season. First pitch is at 4pm 🐾🧡 This weeks ATHLETE OF THE WEEK goes to Senior Captain Charlotte Selover. Primarily in the circle, Charlotte has been outstanding for Middle’s defense. Against Lower Cape May Regional on Tuesday May 4th, Charlotte went 5 innings, only allowed 2 hits, surrendered one walk and finished the game with 7 strike outs!
Not only is Charlotte a superb athlete, she is also a model student. This past week on “National College Decision Day ”, she announced that she will be a Princeton Tiger in the fall.
