The MTHS softball program had their first double header at Boyd Street this morning with both the Varsity and JV teams hosting the EHT Eagles.
The Varsity squad watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in the 11-0 loss. 3 runs scored in the first inning put the Panthers on the defensive right away. Sarah Hughs put down a solid bunt for the home team in the fourth inning. This was the only hit for the Panthers. EHT's Korsak was the winning pitcher, going 7 innings, allowing zero runs in one hit, striking out 15 panthers and walking zero. Charlotte Selover took the loss for Middle. The senior pitcher allowed 17 hits and 11 runs over seven innings, striking out 4. The Panthers are at home all this week with their first meeting on Monday with Cedar Creek. First pitch is at 4pm. Oh what a day for the MTHS softball team! Coming into today's game, Middle would face a team that had "10 runned" every opponent they saw. was #1 in their conference and #1 in their division at 6-0. But that didn't stop the Panthers. That fed fuel to the fire.
The team came out ready to play putting 3 runs down in the second inning. Alexis Yaeckel got things moving when she singled in her first at bat, scoring one run. The team capitalized on a fielders error running in two more runs in the 6th inning. Charlotte Selover & Grace Thompson each collected multiple hits for Middle. Both crushing the ball for a double each. Middle saw the ball well today, racking up 5 hits against a tough pitching team. Top of the 6th Middle was leading the Wildcats 5-1. With one runner on and 2 strike outs the Panthers were sitting pretty. Two difficult errors led the game to a 5-5 tie going into the 7th. Middle could not get their bats around at the tip of the 7th inning, leaving SJ a chance to come back. In the end, the home teams 6th batter pulled a hard hit ball down the left field line and ended up with the final RBI of the game. Senior pitcher Charlotte Selover would take the loss for the Panthers. She pitched the entire game, allowed 6 hits and 6 runs while striking out 5. Middle will face Egg Harbor Township tomorrow morning home at Boyd Street field for their first of many home games over the next week. First pitch is at 10am. Go MIDDLE! Strong offense was not enough to secure the win over mainland on Thursday for the MTHS Softball team.
Both teams pitchers had their hands full this afternoon in a high-scoring affair where Middle fell to Mainland Regional 18-8. Middle held the lead in the second inning, besting Mainland 5-3 at the end of the inning. The Mustangs pulled away for goof with 7 runs in the third inning. Big bats from many Panthers in the game. In the second inning; Charlotte Selover rallied a triple, Morgan Kern connected for a single and Grace Thompson made her season debut in the DP slot with a double. Isabella D'Alonzo went 2 for 3 at the plate to lead Middle in hits. The team continues their week with yet another away game tomorrow @ St. Joseph's. First pitch is at 4pm. Keep working ladies! This weeks ATHLETE OF THE WEEK goes to sophomore catcher Isabella D'Alonzo. New to the program "Bella" has stepped up and become a real asset to the team so far this season. Starting in the outfield for scrimmages and moving into the catcher position after injuries, she has caught every game thus far.
Not only has she been great behind the plate, she has also been working so hard in the batters box. Bella leads the team in RBIs with 13 in 23 at bats. She also is one of the top 3 batters ion the team for hits with 8. In the game against Absegami, Bella collected multiple hits even after taking a foul tip ball to the helmet on defense in the 6th inning. Versus Pleasantville on Tuesday, Bella had 3 RBIs off of 2 hits and pulled a solid double to help Middle move past the Greyhounds! Way to go Bella!! Keep up the great work! Middle was looking for their 2nd win of the season and first at Boyd Street!
Leading the Panthers in the batters box was Emma Messer with 4 RBIs off of 2 hits. Behind her was Bella D'Alonzo with 3 RBIs off of 2 hits, one being a double. Sarah Hughes also doubled out and snatched 2 RBIs. Senior captain Sayde Nichols was in the circle for the home team. She faced 14 batters, struck out 6, and walked 1. First no hitter for the senior this season. Much deserving win for the pitcher and the second game ball of the season for the team!! The gam finished in 2.5 innings after Middle put up 13 runs in the first inning and 6 runs in the second to seal the deal. The Panthers won their second game this season (19-0), moving them to a 2-5 record. The team continues their tough week Thursday April 29th against Mainland Regional High School in their first match up this season. The game is away at Mainland and will start at 4pm. Go Middle! Middle Township fell behind early and couldn't come back in an 8-0 loss to Buena on Monday.
Buena scored on a triple by D’Ottavio in the first inning, a single by Cortez in the first inning, a single by Sheridan in the first inning, and a groundout by Perry in the second inning. The Middle Township Panthers Varsity struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Buena, giving up eight runs. A single by Sayde Nichols in the first inning was a positive for Middle. D’Ottavio was in the circle for Buena. The fireballer lasted seven innings, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out nine and walking zero. Charlotte Selover was on the rubber for the Panthers. The pitcher surrendered eight runs on 11 hits over six innings, striking out four and walking one. Nichols went 1-for-3 at the plate to lead Middle Township Panthers Varsity in hits. Buena had 11 hits in the game. Hand, Sheridan, and Cortez each racked up multiple hits for Buena. In the second inning, The Braves got their offense started when Absegami scored one run on a stolen base. They pulled away for good with three runs in the third inning. In the third Cappolina doubled on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs and Hillesheim singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run. Smith led things off on the rubber for Gami Smith surrendered three runs on ten hits over seven innings, striking out 11 and walking one. Charlotte Selover led things off in the pitcher's circle for the Panthers. Selover surrendered six runs on six hits over six innings, striking out seven and walking one. Middle racked up ten hits in the game. Selover and Isabella D’Alonzo each collected multiple hits for the team. Selover led with three hits in four at bats. Vineland fired up the offense in the first inning. Negran drove in one when Negran singled. Vineland pulled away for good with six runs in the third inning. In the third Cantoni singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run, Dickinson singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run, Rodriguez singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run, and Torres singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. Santiago led things off in the pitcher's circle for Vineland. The bulldog went six innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, striking out one and walking zero. Sayde Nichols was in the circle for Middle. The righthander went four innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and striking out one. Charlotte Selover threw two innings out of the bullpen. Middle Township Panthers scattered nine hits in the game. Nichols and Sarah Hughes each managed multiple hits for the team. Nichols led Middle with three hits in three at bats. Vineland had 12 hits in the game. Cantoni, Rodriguez, and Dickinson each collected multiple hits for Vineland. Vineland didn't commit a single error in the field. The MTHS Varsity Softball team traveled to Cape May Technical School on Thursday afternoon for their first meeting of the season against the hawks. Eager to get their first win under their belts, the Panthers were fired up for the game.
The team got things running in the first inning with 3 runs. The Panthers scored 7 runs in the fourth inning, making it a 10-0 game. The inning was led by singles by Charlotte Selover and Alexis Yaeckel, a walk by Sayde Nichols, a triple by Isabella D'Alonzo and an error on a ball put into play by Olivia Clarke. Charlotte Selover earned the win for Middle; went 5 innings, allowing one run on one hit, striking out 10 and walking one. The Panthers scattered 8 hits in the game. Selover and Kailyn Jamison had multiple hits in the game. Both Nichols and D'Alonzo crushed the ball for one triple each. In the end, the visiting team came away with the win- Middle |16| CMT |1|. This game was also the first win under coach Megan Russ. Awesome team win today! Middle will travel to Oakcrest this weekend for the Betty Howell tournament where they pulled Absegami for their first round game on Saturday 4/24/21 at 12pm. GOOD LUCK! Middle had a tough time defensively containing OLMA, giving up 19 runs off of 23 hits.
Sayde Nichols found her way back to the circle after not pitching in an official game in over 3 years. The defense could not back her up, leading to a loss for the senior. She did however strike out 4 batters, went 2 for 2 in the batters box and rallied 2 RBI's for the Panthers. Positive offensive stats for the day: Charlotte Selover (2-3), Olivia Clarke (1-3), Kailyn Jamison (1-2) and Alexis Yaeckel (1-2). The team will travel to Cape May Tech tomorrow (4/22), seeking their first win of the season. First pitch is at 4pm. GO PANTHERS! |
